peripheries in parallax

MATTER – From Actual Presence
to Virtual Representation

MATTER is an exhibition in three parts, asking the question of openness and accessibility and challenging the participating artists to place their works into an open situation of unsureness. The exhibitions and art events provide an experience of an ‘Exploded White Cube’ studying the essence of the walls – physical and conceptual – of the gallery space / Institutional art spaces.

The exhibition series is an experiment of what (might) happen in the situation of unsureness in a wall(less) and door(less) gallery space, when there is no door to be closed to separate the institution of the white cube and the world it is in. The exhibition takes place concretely and conceptually between the inside and the outside of institutions both at the Aalto University Campus and at the online conference series peripheries in parallax: BRAVE NEW PERIPHERIES.

In terms of location, MATTER takes a peripheric position in the borderline between the campus area and the edge of Espoo City park. This park was formerly part of Hagerlund Manor, and its main building was demolished due the development of the campus area of the Polytechnical University in the 1960’s.

Pia Euro

A visual artist and university lecturer in Aalto ARTS’ ViCCA.  >> I am visual artist graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. My main interest as an artist is to study the very thin line that divides art from something we can think of not being art….I am very curious to find new ways to present art, and cross disciplinary practice is my thing. I work with various methods and mediums – from video installations to material and spatial installations, and performances, etc.<<

Tanja Kiiveri
